Tipical Charlie
Welcome to Tipical Charlie, a repository of all kinds of tips related to computing, from web developer and technologist, Charlie Arehart.
I'll mostly share my own tips that I've found others enjoyed hearing about. I'll welcome tips from others, too.
(Wondering where I came up with the name?)

Wish you could "snooze" a reminder on your Blackberry: you can, it's just not enabled by default!

posted Saturday, 15 July 2006

Some folks who use a Blackberry complain that they miss the feature other PDAs have, where when an appointment reminder displays, they'd just like to be able to hit a snooze button for some number of minutes. But it's not there on a BB...or is it?

I always was using the only choice that made sense, clicking "open" and then laboriously changing the appointment time or the number of minutes for reminding before the event. Frustrating!

I finally decided to poke around to find if there was a better way. My previous entry on BB tips showed that there are also very surprising things buried deep in the BB. Well, I found the solution! Thanks to:

It pointed out that the snooze feature is indeed there, but it's DISABLED BY DEFAULT. Damn whoever decided that! (It's only slightly less understandable than the default disabling of SureType, as I discussed in my previous entry.)

For my 7130, I needed to go to the calendar, then choose "options" from the context menu (click the wheel and see "options" near the bottom of the menu list). Then choose "snooze" and click it to "change option" from "none" to a number from 1 to 30 minutes. Click it again to save the setting. Do the same thing in the "tasks" application if you use that (Tools>Tasks).

Now, when you get a reminder, you see a new option besides "open" and "dismiss". Sweet!

Very nice...now if the snooze feature had 24 hours (LIKE WINDOWS MOBILE) it would be much better. I use the 24 hour snooze feature immensely for bday reminders and meetings.

I totally agree. Often I want to have reminders for the day come up, but then see them again maybe 4 or 8 hours later, or as you say on another day.

The Windows Mobile OS has given these options for years.

I'm also finding the BB sync software is inadvertantly clearing my reminders set in Outlook altogether, and for no apparent reason. Anybody know why that would be?
