Tipical Charlie
Welcome to Tipical Charlie, a repository of all kinds of tips related to computing, from web developer and technologist, Charlie Arehart.
I'll mostly share my own tips that I've found others enjoyed hearing about. I'll welcome tips from others, too.
(Wondering where I came up with the name?)

Cleaning out individual auto-suggest URL entries in IE (6)

posted Tuesday, 10 July 2007

Many know that the major browsers offer a means to clear out all the history of pages you've visited, etc. But what if you want to remove a couple such URLs that popup as you type in the URL? Nothing nefarious here in me wanting to do that (not trying to hide my tracks to anything from anyone): I just have some URLs for a couple of sites (which I don't visit often) that come up first in the autosuggest when I would rather see more important URLs that I do visit often on those same sites.

Well, in Firefox, it's as easy as selecting the URL from the list using the keyboard (up/down arrow) and clicking your delete key. In IE 6 and 7, that doesn't work, but there is a useful tool to solve the problem:

Check out IEHistory View: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iehv.html

It's freeware, and works wonderfully well. No installer. Just unzip and run it. It very quickly shows all your entries (showed me my 5,000+ in just a second). See screenshot below.

And despite the name, it's more than just a viewer: you can of course delete entries. The list is sortable and it even makes it easy to find specific entries if you have too many or have a hard time finding some one.

Better still, it's designed nicely for keyboard fans. You can just use the up/down arrows to highlight a line, hit the space bar (to check it off), and then hit the delete key to delete those entries.

Below is a screenshot of the tool from the vendor's site. All in all, a really nice tool, especially for free. I'm sorry I've missed out on it for so long!
